What are the requirements for retirement in Argentina such as incom, visa, medical ins. even schools for children,can you help me find help on any of these matters. I we plan on going on a fact finding trip in may, any suggestions? Thank you, David Silva Dallas, Texas

Comment #1 gabriel (200.68.92.125) -

Hi David,

In my English lesson I´d pleased to answer your question about retirement in Argentina.

I would consider the necessary income to rent a 2 bedroom apartment, have medical insurance, and everything including food, maintenance o a house in a nice area, restaurants, medical ins. etc por 3 people, will cost you ranging from U$S1.500 or U$S2.000 a month.

English private schools start at about U$200 per child.

If I can help you with any other recommendations, please let me know.

Regards.

For years, I've been interested in South America. Now that I'm close to retirement, I'm considering living abroad. Can you give me accurate information about the cost of daily life in Argentina. My understanding is that Americans aren't safe in that country. I grew up in Texas. I'm drawn to the Latino culture. I've been considering Mexico, as well.............although, Mexico doesn't cozy up to white Americans, either. I will have approximately $2,000 dollars per month of retirement income.

Any information you can provide will be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

(1) Are pensions earned outside Argentina taxed by Argentina?

(2) Must a visa for a retired person be requested in his country of origin or can it be requested in his country of residence? In my case, I am a US citizen but I reside in Costa Rica and have not been in the USA for years.

Thank you!

I currently live in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Philippines and am considering a move to Argentina to continue with my retirement years. I would most appreciate communicating with an American ex-pat living in Argentina for general information on visa requirements, long-term stay restrictions, medical services, housing, etc. Thanks very much, Jame

I am a single 64 year old and interested in learning about retirement in Argentina. Visa requirements, rental housing costs (very small studio or 1 bedroom), and is it possible for one my age from the us to purchase health insurance in argentina?

Comment #8 John from Istanbul (Contact Member) -

Go and visit for 6 months or a year.. if you like it then you'll have had plenty of time to track down the info you need... and remember most of Argentina is NOT tropical and the southern areas make make you wish for a northern Canadian winter!

Comment #9 Dean (63.176.159.66) -

I suggest that you should consult your local immigration department before you make such decision.

Just returned from one month in Argentina...enjoyed every minute of it. I retire in next 6 months and my wife & I are considering a future move. I speak a little Italian...which served me pretty well during my travels...and am a big futbol fan. Favorite area is Bariloche. Any feedback or advise?

Do any retired expats like to get together for lunch or dinner? My husband and I will be visiting in May. Last time we got together with a few expats and had a great time at La Tranquera. We are interested in meeting expats who have retired to Argentina.

Gracias.

Gayle

Two questions:

My wife and I are considering Argentina for retirement. I understand that I can get a retirement visa with my retirement income.

1.I have read in other forums that my retirement income is taxed by Argentina and then by the US. Is that true? Other countries, like Panama and Ecuador, do not tax retirees on money coming from out of the country.

2. How much is the tax if we bring our used furniture with us into Argentina?

Thanks, Mike

Visas

Visa extensions

For a 90-day extension on your tourist visa, visit the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (immigration office;011-4317-0200; Antártida Argentina 1355; 7:30am-1:30pm Mon-Fri) in Buenos Aires. You must do so during the week that your tourist visa is scheduled to expire. The fee is AR$100.

Another option if you’re staying more than three months is to cross into Colonia or Montevideo (both in Uruguay) or into Chile for a day or two before your visa expires, then return with a new 90-day visa. However, this only works if you don’t need a visa to enter the other country (Australians need visas for Uruguay).

Why retire in Argentina?

Here is what I got in the net:

Argentina is a wonderful destination for those considering a retirement overseas. It is a beautiful country that is often compared to Europe for its culture. In other words, retiring in Argentina can be a comparable and affordable alternative for those who have dreamt of retiring in Europe but are unwilling to yield to Europe's unreasonably high cost of living.

The cost of living in Argentina is quite low, so your retirement funds will be able to stretch a long way in this part of the world. The nation is recovering from its past economic recession, so right now you can actually have the best of both worlds: prices are low and the economy is improving. This second fact means that there are lots of opportunities at the moment for making investments in Argentina. A wise investment or two may help a long way in funding your Argentine retirement and allowing you to live like royalty for next to nothing .

To quito0819:

Why not garage sale those furniture and buy new ones when you arrive at Argentina, I think that would be the most perfect thing to do. You will not be dealing with taxes and travel fees as well. Or if you have antiques then those are best to be considered for keeping..

Well that was just only a suggestion, during this times of economic crisis we are opt to be very practical and economical.

well Argentina is still a great place... prices have changed in the last few years..i would say about 50% more than prices 3 years ago.. real estate is also up now.. a small apartment 50 meters will be 90, 000 or more.. the msall apartments are weird for me.... used to a big house.. and not hearing my neighbors... but Argentina has some of the best steak and red wine you can ever find.. Buenos Aires is huge.. new york like.. and busy and noisy.. you have to like the buses and a lot of people..... many people here just get the 90 day stamp and never get anything else..i know guys with businesses down here and they go over to colonia uruguay for lunch every 3 months... get a new stamp.. and have another 90 days.. you can get a DNI but it takes time about 6-9 months.. and then you have to prove you bringong money down here it is a long process.... yes come down.. rent for three months.. the biggest problem is the language.. a mix of spanish and italian.. if you have lived in mexico.. it isnt the same language hahaha very italian.. but i love Argentina.... if i can help anyone write me... and dont believe everything you read in international living..hahaha they write stuff and they have never been to the country!!! haha cheers.. steve

Argentina is the preffered choice of retirement for many people. It is quite the same as retiring in Europe only that this option is relatively cheaper. Overseas retirement in the South American nation has incredible opportunities especially for those with investment prospects. There is lots of exciting real estate too. The decision to retire in a foreign country is also feasible for those considering early retirement

Comment #22 Chuck (63.176.159.44) -

Here are some suggested place to retire in Argentina

Buenos Aires or "Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires", usually called Capital Federal to distinguish it from the province of Buenos Aires.

* Córdoba, second largest.

* La Plata, capital of the most important state, and known as "the perfect city" for its tracing.

* Mendoza, fourth largest, well known for its extensive and high quality wine production.

* Rosario, third largest city.

* San Juan, the tenth largest city, capital of the province of San Juan, and a center of quality wine production.

There are also a lot of medium-sized towns, like

* Bahía Blanca

* Comodoro Rivadavia

* Concepción del Uruguay

* Mar del Plata

* Necochea

* Río Gallegos

* Salta

* Santa Fe

* Tucuman

* Ushuaia

* Villa Gesell

We are searching for a retired American couple that might be interested in chatting about life there. My wife and I are considing retiring to San Carlos de Bariloche based on only being able to read about hoe beautiful a place it is. My wife is fluent in spanish, however I am not. Do a fair amout of the population speak English? Do you think I woild have trouble trying to speak to people there? If there is anyone out there that would be kind enough to chat with us we would be greatly appreciative.

Regards,

Lenny and Elena

I am not a big fan of retirement, but I can see myself looking toward Argentina, for sure, as this place is surely one in which to relax, and one can easily live out the remainder of one's life when surrounded by beautiful things.
